May Pang's INSTAMATIC KARMA EXHIBITION comes to Stephen Archdeacon Gallery in Palm Springs CA, November 12 2011.
May Pang was John Lennon's lover for 18 months in 1973-75 when he was separated from Yoko. An exhibition of her exclusive photos of Lennon, and the exploits of his life during that time will be coming to Palm Springs. Site and Sound, a nonprofit whose mission is to further popular culture, is producing the show at the Stephen Archdeacon Gallery in on November 12th.
May Pang, a native of New York's Spanish Harlem, grew up with street corner do-wop until the British invasion in 1964, and then rock n' roll became her passion. May wanted a career in the music industry, so she decided to start at the top. She landed a position at ABKCO in 1970, the Beatles management company, and went on to become personal assistant to John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1971.
In June 1973, May embarked on a "lost weekend" of whirlwind adventures with John that lasted for a year and a half. John was very productive during this period and achieved #1 hits with both the single "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" and the "Walls and Bridges" album. He also started musical collaborations with Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, and Ringo Starr.
The romantic relationship between May and John ended in February of 1975 when John and Yoko reconciled. After John's death in 1980, May was hounded by reporters to tell her story, and the memoir titled "Loving John" was printed in 1983 by Warner — an insightful look at John's relationships with the other Beatles and Yoko. May has also put together "The Lost Weekend," a book about their lives and the time she and John spent together.
Most recently, May released "Instamatic Karma" — a book of never before seen photographs taken during the time she and John Lennon shared together. The book includes intimate photos of John, May, Julian Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, and others. The best of these will be on display at the Stephen Archdeacon Gallery for a one night exhibition and you can purchase a copy of her signed book.
A live set of Beatles & John Lennon songs will be performed by Kevin Casey (of the San Francisco-based rock band RubberSideDown) along with several Coachella Valley musicians, at 7pm.
Stephen Archdeacon Gallery is located at 865 N. Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, CA. 760-673-7520
